Cottage near Fromelles
The lodge is 4 km from the Fromelles military cemetery, where a diversionary battle took place in July 1916. Australian soldiers took part there for their first operation on the European front, in support of the battle of the Somme. Unfortunately, this battle resulted in nearly 5,500 casualties for Australian troops, including 1,800 soldiers missing. In the summer of 2009, an archaeological excavation campaign carried out around the Bois du Pheasant found the bodies of 250 Australian and British soldiers buried in pits by German forces after the battle. The remains were then reinterred in the first Commonwealth War Cemetery established since the end of the Second World War. On July 19, 2010, the Australian, British and French authorities solemnly inaugurated the cemetery in homage to the soldiers who fell during the Battle of Fromelles.
